- Cumberland Valley School District parents voiced their frustration Tuesday night after a 15-year-old brought a loaded semi-automatic handgun to Eagle View Middle School on February 6.
A petition, organized by Rukmini Yarlagadda and other parents, urges district administrators to implement safety changes.
"The safety of the students, making them feel like each and every corner of the school has been detected, scanned, and that you are protected, that's a confidence we want to give the kids," said Yarlagadda, the parent of a sixth grader.
Prior to Tuesday’s meeting, more than 1,500 people signed in agreement.

- A local business owner is excited to share the vibrant flavors of Portugal with the York community during Restaurant Week York.
Steven Moreira, owner of Mesa Moreira, has honed his menu to preserve his Portuguese culinary heritage. He says his restaurant is the first Portuguese eatery in central Pennsylvania and only the third in the state. He and his wife Christie opened it to fulfill a promise to Steven's parents to own a restaurant.
"We try to make it very homey," Moreira said. "It's a very typical European restaurant where you come in, you're greeted, it's a different experience... We don't recommend to come in in a rush... It's somewhere where you want to sit down with a friend, have some sangria, have some good food, and be there for a while."

- Throughout February, FOX43 News will shine the spotlight on Black-owned businesses in Central Pennsylvania. Showing uniqueness, individuality, culture and the arts, FOX43 will visit several businesses and understand what it means to be Black-owned.
The third stop is Pastorante, located in Harrisburg.
Pastorante was erected in 2013 and was the second restaurant on N. 3rd Street to offer ethnic food to the community. Owners Sri Kunarasingan and Shacarla Brown say that when they first moved into the neighborhood, it wasn’t the greatest, with crime rising and many people hesitant to make a trip into the city.
“The neighborhood was a little shady, but we took a gamble, and over time it progressively got better and better, but it was a struggle because many people wouldn’t come in,” said Kunarasingan.
Both owners say they feel they contributed to changing the environment of the neighborhood because they offered something ...

- Description
- Sojourn Noir is a new marketing initiative that aims to promote travel by the Black community into York County. The initiative created in 2022 by Joanne Wilmore, owner of Grace Manor Bed & Breakfast in York, intends to keep the Black traveler in mind to ensure a welcoming and fun experience
"One of the things that we look at Sojourn Noir is for Black people to be able to travel and be their authentic selves," said Wilmore.
According to travel marketing company MMGY, a 2019 survey indicated that in the U.S. 42% of Black travelers felt discriminated against or unwelcome in the destinations they traveled to. That number rose to 46% in 2022.
"There is still vestiges of discrimination," said Wilmore. "There’s things like tableside racism that still exists in this country. There’s things like encumbered retail shopping and tourists experience this."

- Description
- Performance is one of the best forms of self-expression and one Harrisburg woman is doing exactly that with some thought-provoking theater.
The goal of the Sankofa African American Theatre Company is to honor and tell African American stories all year long.
"Sankofa was founded about seven years ago," explained Sharia Benn, the executive artistic director and co-founder of the theatre. "I came to Harrisburg from Baltimore and found that there wasn't a lot of theatre for me to be a part of as an actor and stories that were being told that I really could identify with. There was a gap."
Today, Sanfoka offers workshops for organizations on equity, diversity and inclusion. The theatre strives to provide a safe space for critical conversation about race to create lasting social change.
