- Ask the I-Team: Helping asylum seekers enter the workforce in Maine
- Date posted
- Description
- In recent months, there has been a large influx of asylum seekers making their way to Maine.
They have struggled to find housing. They also have to wait six months before they can enter the workforce.
Jeff asked the CBS13 I-Team:
"Do they have programs available to help train these individuals while they wait to be able to work? Will they be ready to enter the workforce once they're legally able to?"
Under federal law, those seeking asylum in the United States have to wait six months before being able to work here.
While some lawmakers are debating lowering that wait, in the meantime, there are numerous organizations giving asylum seekers the skills they need to be ready once they can work.

- Hundreds of asylum seekers are moving into the Portland Expo on Monday. City leaders expect the temporary shelter to fill up right away.
When the interim city manager told the city council about the plan late last month, she specifically said this space would be set up for individuals and families, but when people arrived on Monday that was no longer the case.
Kristen Dow, the director of Portland Department of Health and Human Services, says because there are so many asylum seekers in the city, they had to change the plan and now individuals can’t stay there.
There are enough beds inside for 300 people.
The city says they need your help. They're asking for monetary donations and volunteers.

- As Maine communities see higher costs for asylum seekers, Sen. Susan Collins pushes for reform
- Date posted

- Description
- As more asylum seekers arrive in Maine, communities are left bearing a lot of new expenses. Since the start of the year, nearly 1,000 people have landed in Portland alone.
With more people coming to the state, that increases costs for things like schools and general assistance.
This is impacting communities like Saco, Brunswick, and especially Portland.
Portland officials are preparing to open the Portland Expo next Monday for asylum-seeking individuals and families.
In 2019, it reportedly cost $400,000 for the emergency shelter alone.
“Is there any kind of federal assistance that might help these communities with those costs?” CBS13 reporter Mal Meyer asked.
“There has been some federal assistance but by and large, the costs fall on the local municipality, and that's why I’m very eager to find a solution,” Maine Senator Susan Collins replied.

Even with higher pay and better benefits, sheriff's departments across the state are struggling to find people willing to work in law enforcement.
With 72 current openings for corrections officers, Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce says he had no choice but to close half the jail.
Jail staff is currently down to 40 percent.
Of the 10 jail pods, five are no longer used, including all of Block C.
The capacity of the Cumberland County Jail is 570 inmates, because of the shortage of corrections officers, it's currently down to 220.
Maine State Police and Portland police say only people accused of violent crimes, for the most part, are locked up.
Statewide, 14 of Maine’s 16 counties have job openings for corrections officers, sheriff's deputies, or both.

He says Trump and Republicans claim the district attorney is going after Trump as a political enemy, while Democrats have claimed the DA has been slow and cautious, showing intent to minimize the politics.
"I think I would go between those two,” Schmidt said. “I would say that he has been very hesitant, and I can imagine very political reasons for doing that. To be the first prosecutor to go after, or to indict a former president, is a risky move for someone holding an elected office. He decided not to indict in a previous case, and a couple of prosecutors quit over that. So I think he was reluctant to do this. The fact that he's doing it now, then, maybe has a little more weight."

- Maine lobster lotion skincare: New cream being used to fight eczema
- Date posted

- Description
- Forget lobster rolls. How about lobster lotion? A Maine-based skincare company is creating a one-of-a-kind cream using a protein found in lobster.
It all started when Patrick Breeding and Amber Boutiette were bio-engineering undergrads at UMaine Orono. Amber was struggling with debilitating eczema.
"I was one of those people who tried everything, from steroids to bland moisturizers that don't really do anything," said Boutiette. "Nothing was really helping my condition and I was pretty much just living with it."
That is, until they learned about marine glycoproteins, which allow lobsters to regenerate limbs.
"In the same way they do that, we thought through the literature and some anecdotal evidence, it could help repair the skin barrier," said Breeding.
They created a basic prototype with the proteins and Vaseline and were shocked by the results.
"Within about two days I started to see a different. And after...

This comes as about 900 asylum seekers have arrived in Portland since the beginning of the year.
Collins referred to a story out of Freeport, where restaurant and hotel owners wanted to hire asylum seekers eager to work and staying in a nearby hotel.
"So, if we allowed asylum seekers to work after a one month vetting period, as long as they entered through a legal port of entry, one month would give us time to do an initial background check, to make sure they weren't on the terrorist watch list, for example, and to verify their identities," Collins said. "Why couldn't we change the law and have a win-win situation here?"
Mayorkas said he looked forward to working with Collins on a bipartisan bill to reduce the waiting period from...

- Portland is at the center of an asylum seeker crisis in Maine where housing is in desperately short supply, and it can take months for an apartment to open up.
Senator Susan Collins is urging Homeland Security to stop sending asylum seekers to Maine if they don't have a verified destination address.
More than 900 asylum seekers have arrived in Portland since the first of the year after crossing the southern border.
In a letter to the head of Homeland Security, Collins says many were provided transportation to Maine even though shelters and many services are at capacity.
Collins says Maine communities are doing their part to help asylum seekers in need but says the surge of new Mainers has strained communities far beyond their capacity.
Asylum seekers say they're being told Maine is a safe place to live, but they're not being told about the state's housing crisis when they are bussed here.

- Can security deposits be increased alongside rent in Maine?
- Date posted
- Description
- When you rent a place to live, you're typically required to hand over some money up front, including a security deposit.
Many landlords require it to protect against unpaid rent or any damage to the unit and state law does limit the amount.
Maud asked the CBS13 I-Team:
“Can a landlord increase your security deposit when they increase your rent? For example, I got a letter that my rent will increase by $100 a month starting April 1 and also a onetime payment of $100 are due at the same time for my security deposit to match my increased rent amount. Is this legal?"
Turns out, Maine’s statutes on security deposits don't directly address this.
The law does specify it can't be any more than two months’ rent. So, if rent is $1,000 a month, the security deposit can't be higher than $2,000.
And in the city of Portland, it's restricted to one month's rent.
Pine Tree Legal says there is a distinction...
