O'Brien has now written a memoir -- entitled Country Girl in which she describes her Irish childhood, her unhappy marriage to an older man and her life in London in the Swinging Sixties. She said many times that she would never write a memoir, so I wondered what had prompted her to do it now.

In September 2012, a female student was gang raped and attacked by six men on a bus in Delhi, India. She'd gone to see a film with her boyfriend and was on her way home. VoR's Juliet Spare leads a discussion on the issues this appalling incident raised. Three months later, the bus driver and three other men were arrested and the victim died from organ failure in hospital in Singapore after suffering severe internal and brain injuries.
The victim's mother demanded capital punishment for all the perpetrators, saying they should all be hanged until they're dead. On the 13 th September 2013, a judge in Delhi sentenced four men convicted for their role in the gang-rape and murder of the 23-year-old to death. The Judge said the attack "shocked the collective conscience" of India and this case resonates deeply with women all over the world

People who spit in public can now be prosecuted after a London council won a landmark legal ruling. In late September, Thames Magistrate Court agreed with Waltham Forest Council that spit was a form of litter. Two men who had refused to pay an £80 fixed penalty notice given to them by the council were each ordered to pay the original fine plus legal fees -- bringing the total cost to £300. Waltham Forest has been issuing spitting fines since February this year and says the measure has the support of the public. It also has the support of Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, who says "spitting on Britain's streets is not socially acceptable". The move has stirred debate.
