2015 is almost over, and a new year will soon begin. Many Japanese families will start 2016 by enjoying a traditional osechi feast.
Our next “Delicious” page will tell you all about osechi dishes, which are beautifully arranged in lacquer boxes.
Many osechi dishes carry symbolic wishes for the new year.
For example, the golden color of kurikinton, made with sweet potatoes and chestnuts, suggests wealth, while kuromame black beans represent health because “mame,” or bean, can also mean brisk and healthy.

- Thirteen wheeled floats decorated with flowers and lanterns were towed in the Shinminato Hikiyama Festival in the Shinminato district in Imizu city, Toyama Prefecture, on Oct. 1. The festival, which dates back about 360 years, is part of the annual Shinto ritual of the Hojozu Hachiman Shrine in autumn. According to the city tourism association, the floats are about eight meters tall and weigh about four tons each. - The cycling and walking paths along the Tama River are collectively called Tamagawa Cycling Course, connecting from the mouth of the river in Tokyo’s Haneda area to the city of Hamura in the western side of the capital for about 55 kilometers. The paths, which attract many riders on weekends and even weekdays, are considered one of the major cycling courses in the Kanto region. But please be careful: They are also walking paths, and pedestrians should be paid courtesy. About 5,000 mirrors are spread over the walls and ceiling of a tunnel. - An interactive humanoid robot was introduced at the Kinosaki Onsen hot spring resort in Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, on Sept. 16. The robot is used to communicate with visitors and provide them with tourist information. This project was devised by Tajima Kuko Suishin Kyogikai (Tajima Airport promotion association) in the city. At the spa resort area which is known as a town of the history, literature and hot spring, the state-of-the-art robot attends not only to Japanese but also foreign tourists. - A temporary waste disposal area is covered by a massive amount of debris from the Kinugawa river flooding in Joso, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Wednesday. Six of these areas are already full of debris, prompting four more to be created in Joso and neighboring cities where lines of trucks were waiting to drop off more waste collected in the prefecture. The city estimates that the disaster created 26,544 tons of debris in Ibaraki Prefecture, 24,332 tons from Joso alone.

A Yomiuri Shimbun reporter did just that recently, on a visit to the Amami Islands of southern Japan, listening to birdsongs as she paddled along.
She learned that one kind of tree in the forest has floating seeds that take root after they lodge in the burrows of crabs.
