- Description
- #thecosmosnews Massive Martian dust devil passed over the Perseverance rover, and it recorded the eerie sounds.
Scientists have seen plenty of dust devils on Mars, and now, for the first time, they’ve heard one. The vortex made a direct hit on NASA’s Perseverance rover, peppering the spacecraft with dust and whispering into a microphone that the team had smartly included in their package of instruments.
The trove of data coming from the encounter has thrilled scientists, who are keenly aware of the outsize influence Martian dust has on the planet’s climate. The fine-grained particles also can damage scientific instruments on Martian landers and rovers and potentially blanket solar panels to the point of uselessness. Studying the rover’s gritty recordings can provide insights into the way dust might affect ongoing Mars missions, and maybe even future human exploration.
The sound of the dust devil, published Tuesday to accompany a paper in the journal Nature Com...

- Description
- #thecosmosnews Aside from a tapestry of glittering stars, and the glow of the waxing and waning Moon, the nighttime sky looks inky black to the casual observer. But how dark is dark?
To find out, astronomers decided to sort through 200,000 images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and made tens of thousands of measurements on these images to look for any residual background glow in the sky, in an ambitious project called SKYSURF. This would be any leftover light after subtracting the glow from planets, stars, galaxies, and from dust in the plane of our solar system (called zodiacal light).
When researchers completed this inventory, they found an exceedingly tiny excess of light, equivalent to the steady glow of 10 fireflies spread across the entire sky. That's like turning out all the lights in a shuttered room and still finding an eerie glow coming from the walls, ceiling, and floor.

- Description
- #thecosmosnews Scientists ‘grow black hole in lab’ Scientists have created a black hole in a laboratory to test a decades-old Stephen Hawking theory.
In a new study, researchers were able to recreate the conditions of a black hole in a lab, The US Sun reported.
A black hole is an invisible place in space where gravity pulls so intensely that even light cannot escape it.
The gravity in a black hole is so strong due to the dense matter being contained in a tiny space – this happens when a star is dying.
In the study, a team of scientists used a single-file chain of atoms to simulate the event horizon of a black hole.
What came next is something known as ‘Hawking Radiation’ – a theory proposed by the late physicist Stephen Hawking.
Hawking radiation describes the hypothetical particles that arise outside a black hole’s boundaries because of relativistic quantum effects.

To study the emerging microbes, scientists have now revived a number of these "zombie viruses" from Siberian permafrost, including one thought to be nearly 50,000 years old – a record age for a frozen virus returning to a state capable of infecting other organisms.
The team behind the work, led by microbiologist Jean-Marie Alempic from the French National Centre for Scientific Research, says these reanimating viruses are potentially a significant threat to public health, and further study needs to be done to assess the danger that these infectious agents could pose as they awake from their icy slumber.

- #thecosmosnews A snake seeming to sinuously slink across the surface of the Sun has been captured in a new video by an observatory in close solar orbit.
However, the "serpent" spotted by the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter is not a real stellar squamate but a newly observed solar phenomenon that may be linked to massive eruptions from a restless Sun.
The Orbiter observed the moving structure on 5 September as it moved in for its close approach – called a perihelion – planned for 12 October, the closest Solar Orbiter had been yet. The video from that encounter was just incredible, by the way.
As Solar Orbiter approached, it imaged a rippling line propagating a long path across the Sun. Solar scientists say this is a cooler tube of plasma in the surrounding hot plasma of the Sun's atmosphere, bound by solar magnetic fields.
The video shows the plasma snaking across the Sun from one side to the other, following a filament of the solar...

NASA images show a meteor crashed into Mars, triggered a big quake, and kicked up surprise water ice
NASA’s InSight lander felt the ground shake during the impact while cameras aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured the cavernous new crater from space.
Last December 24, NASA’s InSight lander recorded a magnitude 4 marsquake. However, scientists only learned the cause of that quake later: a meteoroid impact estimated to be one of the biggest seen on Mars since NASA began exploring the cosmos. Furthermore, the meteoroid strike excavated boulder-size chunks of ice buried closer to the Martian equator than ever found before – a discovery with implications for NASA’s future plans to send astronaut explorers to the Red Planet.
Researchers determined the quake resulted from a meteoroid impact when they spotted a new, yawning crate...

A total lunar eclipse will occur across the country early on Tuesday, November 8, astronomers say. It's the first Election Day total lunar eclipse in U.S. history, according to EarthSky.org. And the next Election Day lunar eclipse won't occur for another 372 years, on Nov. 8, 2394.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth, according to NASA. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.
Where and when can you see the eclipse?
Lunar eclipses can be visible from everywhere on the night side of the Earth, if the sky is clear, TimeandDate.com said. "From some places the entire eclipse will be visible, while in other areas the moon will rise or set during the eclipse."

- A monster Black Hole Closest To Solar System Was Found Will It Ever Hit Earth?@TheCosmosNews
- Date posted
- Description
- #thecosmosnews @TheCosmosNews Black holes are among the most awesome and mysterious objects in the known Universe. These gravitational behemoths form when massive stars undergo gravitational collapse at the end of their lifespans and shed their outer layers in a massive explosion (a supernova). Meanwhile, the stellar remnant becomes so dense that the curvature of spacetime becomes infinite in its vicinity and its gravity so intense that nothing (not even light) can escape its surface. This makes them impossible to observe using conventional optical telescopes that study objects in visible light.
As a result, astronomers typically search for black holes in non-visible wavelengths or by observing their effect on objects in their vicinity. After consulting the Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), a team of astronomers led by the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) recently observed a black hole in our cosmic backyard. As they describe in their study, this monster black hole is rough...

- #thecosmosnews Nasa's Earth Observatory re-posted the images after they were taken last year.
It previously explained: "An astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS) took this photograph while orbiting over Southeast Asia and looking toward Earth’s limb."
One blob can be seen at the bottom center of the image and one can be seen to the right.
The big alien-like blob in the center is actually lightning.
The one to the right is the Moon.
Lightning strikes are usually hard to see from the ISS but this huge one occurred through a perfectly timed gap in the clouds.
The surrounding clouds were lit up by the lightning and the strange looking blue blob was formed.
A trick of light also helps the Moon to look like an odd blue blob in the image.

Though this rapid pace is only an optical illusion, according to a new study, it still represents a blast of energy shooting towards us at very nearly the speed of light.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has captured incredible views of the jet—which was ignited by an unprecedented collision between two hyperdense objects, called neutron stars—that led to one of the most important breakthroughs in astronomical history at the time it was discovered in 2017.
While the jet did not actually break the cosmic speed limit, it raced right up to the edge of this impassable threshold, reaching at least 99.97 percent of the speed of light, which translates to about 670 million miles per hour. The Sun has exploded and from it erupted 2,00,000 kilometers-long filament. Experts have said that the debris from the explosion could be headed toward Earth.
As per SOHO observatories, a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is emerging from the blast site and reports cited that data stream stopped before the full CME was visible.
Yesterday, Oct. 4th, a 200,000-km long filament of magnetism in the sun's southern hemisphere erupted. Snapping like a rubber band, it hurled part of itself into space, Spaceweather.com report said.
Debris from the blast might be heading for Earth. SOHO coronagraphs saw hints of a CME emerging from the blast site--but the data stream stopped before the full CME was visible. The missing data should arrive later today. Stay tuned for updates, it also added.

Astronomers suspect that something like this may have really happened — not just once, but several times over the past several billion years.
In a new paper published Sept. 15 in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, researchers explain how a nearby mini-galaxy — the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy — appears to have crashed through the Milky Way on at least two separate occasions, causing stars all around the galaxy to mysteriously oscillate at different speeds.
Using data from the European Space Agency's Gaia space observatory, researchers compared the movements of more than 20 million stars...

- #thecosmosnews NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope shows off its capabilities closer to home with its first image of Neptune. Not only has Webb captured the clearest view of this distant planet’s rings in more than 30 years, but its cameras reveal the ice giant in a whole new light.
Most striking in Webb’s new image is the crisp view of the planet’s rings – some of which have not been detected since NASA’s Voyager 2 became the first spacecraft to observe Neptune during its flyby in 1989. In addition to several bright, narrow rings, the Webb image clearly shows Neptune’s fainter dust bands.
“It has been three decades since we last saw these faint, dusty rings, and this is the first time we’ve seen them in the infrared,” notes Heidi Hammel, a Neptune system expert and interdisciplinary scientist for Webb. Webb’s extremely stable and precise image quality permits these very faint rings to be detected so close to Neptune.

Nobody had ever heard the sound of a meteor crashing into another planet until NASA's InSight lander recorded the seismic waves of a space rock striking Mars.
On September 5, 2021, a rock hurtling through space crossed the red planet's path. The meteor screamed towards the planet's dusty orange surface, sending a shock wave through the atmosphere.
Though it may have burned up from the friction and heat of plowing through Earth's atmosphere, the meteor survived the thin Martian air. It splintered into at least three pieces, which crashed into the planet's surface and made craters.

NASA'S James Web Telescope has released an image of the exoplanet HIP 65426 b using longer infrared wavelengths to reveal new details that ground-based telescopes couldn’t detect.
Astronomers have captured the first direct image of an exoplanet with the James Webb Space Telescope.
The exoplanet, or planet outside of our solar system, is a gas giant about six to 12 times the mass of Jupiter. The planet, called HIP 65426 b, is about 15 to 20 million years old -- just a baby planet when compared to cEarth, which is 4.5 billion years old.
It's located about 385 light-years away from Earth.
The planet can be seen in four different bands of infrared light as taken by Webb's different instruments. Webb sees the universe in infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye -- and makes it the perfect space observatory to reveal details about distant worlds....

While Webb's characteristic diffraction spikes are not 'real', those concentric rings are – and there's a wonderful and fascinating explanation for them.
The star is actually a binary pair of rare stars in the constellation of Cygnus, and their interactions produce precise periodic eruptions of dust that are expanding out in shells into the space around the pair over time.
These shells of dust are glowing in infrared, which has allowed an instrument as sensitive as Webb's MIRI to resolve them in exquisite detail.

Ever wondered what it sounds like inside a black hole?
Over the weekend, NASA shared audio of sound waves that astronomers had extracted from the black hole at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster. The sounds were then amplified and mixed with other data to create this track:
NASA clarified that it was not “intentionally made ominous, but the sound you hear is amplified a lot, and other sounds are interpreted from light data.”
“One of the motivations to create such data sonifications is the desire to share the science with more people,” the space agency added.
The black hole at the center of Perseus has been associated with sound since 2003 when astronomers discovered that pressure waves emitted from the black hole caused ripples in the cluster’s hot gas that could be translated into a note, NASA explained in May when it first released the audio. The note is too low for humans to hear,...

Sometimes labeled the "Spanish Stonehenge," the Dolmen of Guadalperal is a large circle of about 150 standing stones, some more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall, arranged around a central, open oval. Archaeologists speculate that the structure was built in the 4th or 5th millennium B.C. (possibly making it thousands of years older than Stonehenge in England). The mysterious megalith may once have supported a massive stone cap that enclosed the space for ritual uses.

The fossilized bones, in particular, could suggest people lived in North America tens of thousands of years before the generally accepted date for the arrival of the first Native Americans of about 10,000 B.C.
Researchers say radiocarbon dates of chemicals in the mammoth bones, from a mother and her calf, indicate the animals lived about 37,000 years ago in what’s now New Mexico. Patterns of fractures on the bones show they were butchered by humans, who must therefore have lived there at the same time, the researchers added. But the findings are disputed by some other scientists, who say the fractures could have been caused naturally.
The latest “ghost” footprints, meanwhile, were found a few weeks ago on an Air Force missile range in a desert in Utah. Scientists think they...

Earth is actually spinning faster than it used to and recently recorded a time that was the fastest scientists had ever seen.
On 29 June 2022, Earth completed one spin in 1.59 milliseconds less than its usual 24-hour rotation, in turn setting the record for the shortest day – and the latest in a series of speed records for our planet since 2020.
And it came pretty close again more recently, having completed the spin in 1.5 milliseconds shorter than 24 hours.
Scientists began taking accurate daily measurements of the Earth’s rotation in the 1960s, using atomic clocks. These work by using resonance frequencies of atoms to monitor time with extreme precision.
Since then, experts have found that – while there are fluctuations – Earth has been speeding up in recent years, with 2020 seeing 28 shortest days si...

'Thrilling Discovery': Surprising Sea Creature Spotted in the Pacific
Scientists are wondering if it might be a new species.tweet from the Exploration Vessel Nautilus showing an intriguing tentacle-y creature with a long thin stalk reaching down to the ocean floor. I was immediately enchanted. The Nautilus team called it "a thrilling discovery."
The sea pen made its appearance during a visit by a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, to an unexplored seamount near Johnston Atoll, a remote spot to the west of Hawaii in the Pacific. It was unexpected. This is the first time this animal has been spotted in the Pacific. It's normally found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Nautilus came across two examples during the dive.
A video shot at a depth of 9,823 feet (2,994 meters) shows the moment of discovery, along with commentary from...

We all see enchanting sights when flying, but some are more extraordinary than others. A pilot flying over the Atlantic has noticed one of these things, the pilot also says he’s never seen anything like it before
The pilot noticed a bright red/orange glow before departure, which was confirmed when he looked at a photo preview on the camera's back. There was supposed to be nothing but an endless ocean for kilometers around them.
They seemed at first like a distant city or a group of classic Asian squid fishing boats, but this was not possible here. The lights they saw were noticeably bigger than the conventional lights that cities or ships would emit, which are typically yellow and white.
The brightness intensified as they ...

Pink Skies Seen Over Antarctica May Be Explained by Tonga Volcano Eruption
Antarctica's sky turned pink and purple last week, a stunning photo shows.
The change is due to particles released by a volcano eruption at the start of the year.
The blast on Tonga has been affecting skies in other countries too.
The skies above Antarctica are burning a fiery pink, which is thought to be as a result of the Hunga Tonga volcano eruption in January 2022.
Similar hues have dazzled other regions in the Southern Hemisphere during July, including New Zealand and Australia. Antarctica is in a state of near-constant twilight in July, as it is just past midwinter in the Southern Hemisphere, so Antarctic scientists see these sunset-like colors at about midday.
The scientists in Antarctica communicated with New Zealand's Natio...

- #thecosmosnews Weirdly Slow Radio Burst in Space Is 'Like a Heartbeat'
Researchers think it came from an especially intense pulsar or magnetar.
Astronomers have detected a strange radio signal that emits periodically “like a heartbeat” and is coming from the depths of space.
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States were caught by surprise due to the intensity of the radio bursts, as well as their regularity.
The signal is classified as a fast radio burst (FRB), which are intense bursts of radio waves of unknown origin.
This one studied by scientists at MIT and other institutions is currently the longest-lasting FRB to date, with the clearest periodic pattern.
Named FRB 20191221A, the signal persists for much longer - around 1,000 times longer in fact - than the typical FRB, raising questions about what could be causing it.
FRBs tend to last for a few milliseconds a...

NASA's beloved Perseverance Mars rover discovered something particularly strange as it traversed the Red Planet — a coiled mess of unidentified, string-like material that almost resembles a swirl of noodles.
Alas, while we wouldn't be surprised to learn that extraterrestrial life also enjoys delicious linguine, ramen, or any other pasta-centric meal, it's most likely that this oddity is actually a bit of NASA space junk, leftover from Percy's 2021 arrival.
The latest puzzling image beamed back from the red planet shows a weird, tangled object lying in the dust.
If you saw the same thing on Earth, you’d probably think it was some kind of sea creature, a bit of string or even some discarded spaghetti.
The object was snapped by Nasa’s Perseverance rover which has been e...

Eerie images appeared on social media showing the peculiar colour of the sky over Sioux Falls, South Dakota just before a thunderstorm swept through the area.
The National Weather Service confirmed that a ‘derecho storm’ barreled through much of South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa, leaving nearly 30,000 people without power for hours.
Storms qualify as derechos when they have sustained winds of at least 93 km/h and leave a path of damage at least 400 km long, according to the National Weather Service. This particular storm reached a wind speed of 159 km/h.
While residents in South Dakota have grown used to derechos having recently experienced two such storms, the green sky was a highly unusual sight.
What caused the sky to turn green?
It’s not fully understood why green skies oc...

- #thecosmosnews A bus-sized asteroid will pass close to Earth on Wednesday afternoon, passing well within the Moon’s orbit, and you can watch.
Asteroid 2022 NF will make its closest approach of 55,300 miles to Earth on Thursday, 7 July, but the Virtual Telescope Project is offering a livestream tracking the asteroid’s path that launches at 4pm EDT Wednesday afternoon.
Discovered on 4 July by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, or Pan-Starrs telescope at Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, the 22-foot diameter asteroid 2022 NF will not threaten Earth. But Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, or JPL, has yet to plot the asteroid’s path out beyond 2022 in the lab’s small body database — asteroid 2022 NF orbits the Sun once every 3.7 years or so.
It’s also not the only space rock to pass near Earth over the next six days, although it will pass the closest.

Controversy Grows Over whether Mars Samples Endanger Earth
Planetary scientists are eager to bring Red Planet rocks, soil and even air to Earth, but critics fear the risk of contaminating our world’s biosphere with alien viruses
NASA has plans to retrieve samples the Perseverance rover has collected from the surface of Mars and bring them back to Earth to be studied. These unsterilized samples have some pandemic weary people worried, however, about exactly what might be brought back.
The Perseverance rover has been busy since landing on the surface of the Red Planet. One of its objectives has been to collect samples to later be brought back to Earth for study. NASA held two virtual public meetings about the proposed program back in May of this year, in order to inform the public of its plans and to receive feedback. It seems that there are some who have some concerns surrounding the retrieval of the unsterilized samples.

- #thecosmosnews Update:LHCb discovers three new exotic particles
The collaboration has observed a new kind of “pentaquark” and the first-ever pair of “tetraquarks”The international LHCb collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has observed three never-before-seen particles: a new kind of “pentaquark” and the first-ever pair of “tetraquarks”, which includes a new type of tetraquark. The findings, presented today at a CERN seminar, add three new exotic members to the growing list of new hadrons found at the LHC. They will help physicists better understand how quarks bind together into these composite particles.
Quarks are elementary particles and come in six flavours: up, down, charm, strange, top and bottom. They usually combine together in groups of twos and threes to form hadrons such as the protons and neutrons that make up atomic nuclei. More rarely, however, they can also combine into four-quark and five-quark particles, or “tetraquarks...
