- Charlie Rose, the affable North Carolinian known for his thoughtful, low-key interview style, was awarded the National Press Club’s 2014 Fourth Estate Award for a lifetime of achievement.
Rose, who accepted the award Sept. 13, 2014 at a gala dinner, dedicated it to those journalists who “give their lives for the story,” and noted the dramatic courage and sacrifice of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, murdered recently by the Islamic State group. Rose also acknowledged British aid worker David Cawthorne Haines,whose apparent death at the hands of the same group had been reported shortly before the Saturday evening event began.
As a recipient of the Fourth Estate Award, Rose joins a distinguished roster of the nation's top journalists. The first award was bestowed in 1973 to Walter Cronkite of CBS News.

- "Civil Liberties Dead Zone: Do First and Fourth Amendment Rights Not Apply at the Border?" examines known cases of media workers and journalists who have been interrogated at the U.S. border by Homeland Security Department officials who have demanded access to their laptops, thumb drives and other digital devices.
Defended as a tool in the fight against crime and terrorism, the DHS policy has aroused the concern of press freedom advocates who worry the practice could jeopardize reporters' sensitive information -- including the identities of anonymous sources -- particularly if journalists are unaware their digital information is vulnerable to search and seizure at the U.S. border.
The NPC's Freedom of the Press Committee put together a well-rounded expert panel that will examine the legal environment of the policy, the risks it poses to press freedom and to privacy, as well as the potential benefits in the fight against terrorism.
