- These videos show a mix of oil and water shooting from a platform owned by Extex Operating about 9 1/2 miles south of Lafitte Harbor in Barataria Bay on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. The U.S. Coast Guard estimated as much as 15 barrels, or 610 gallons of a crude oil mixture was released from the wellhead, which was later secured. Contractors are now cleaning up the spilled oil. - Cardell Hayes declined to plead guilty as expected Wednesday morning over the 2016 shooting death of retired Saints defensive star Will Smith, leaving several members of Smith's family in grief as they left an Orleans Parish courtroom.
Criminal District Court Judge Camille Buras set a new Feb. 5 date to retry Hayes over the killing of Smith and the shooting of his wife, Racquel, on a Lower Garden District street.
Hayes, 36, stood but said nothing in a black suit, white shirt and braided hair as District Attorney Jason Williams announced in court that Hayes had backed away from pleading guilty as charged to manslaughter.
“There was an intention to accept responsibility as charged,” Williams said. “If in fact Mr. Hayes has decided not to accept responsibility for what happened on this date ... we need to pick a trial date.”

- These three video clips show baby Kemp's Ridley turtles moving from a nest on North Chandeleur Island into the Gulf of Mexico. The first two are time lapse collections of images taken with trail cameras of hatchlings leaving their nests. The third is an iPhone video taken by Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority engineer Olivia LaHaye of a hatchling entering the water. They are part of research being conducted by the authority, Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service aimed at restoring portions of the Chandeleur and Breton islands for colonial birds and sea turtles.
