- Heavily Polluted Russian City Seeks Biden’s Help | The Moscow Times
- Date posted

- Description
- Residents of the heavily polluted Russian city of Chelyabinsk published a video on December 12 appealing for U.S. President-elect Joe Biden's help in "avoiding ecological genocide."
In the video, residents said that Russian authorities ignore their complaints and that industrial emissions in the city cause cancer and choke the city in smoke.
A local climate activist also said that residents decided to appeal to Joe Biden following citywide polls and that appealing to President Putin would be a "waste of time."

- A freak ice storm in Russia's Far East has left almost 100,000 people without electricity in the city of Vladivostok since last week.
Thursday night's freezing rain covered the city with ice and brought down trees and power lines.
Analysts and activists have linked the freak weather phenomenon, which was caused by a hot-air cyclone colliding with a cold-air anticyclone, to global climate change.
The Primorye region saw exceptionally warm temperatures this fall, and the resulting temperature fluctuations may have led to the storm.

- A Tolstoy Descendant Returns to His Roots in Yasnaya Polyana | The Moscow Times
- Date posted
- Description
- Yasnaya Polyana, the childhood home and estate of Russian literary giant Leo Tolstoy, and where he penned masterpieces like "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" has been given a new purpose.
The writer's descendant Ilya Tolstoy has launched a new apple business at his great-great-great-grandfather's estate, producing apple juice from trees planted by Tolstoy himself.
Ilya, 33, had built a career as a television news producer in Russia's capital Moscow when he decided that he wanted a change of pace — and left it behind to make use of the 40 hectares of apple orchards on the estate's property.
It is perhaps here at Yasnaya Polyana — which Tolstoy once described as an "inaccessible literary stronghold" — that one can best get a taste of the writer's legacy.

- Wave of Oil Spills Hits Russia’s Waterways | The Moscow Times
- Date posted

- Description
- A series of oil spills have plagued Russia's waterways in the past month.
The latest, which took place on Oct. 20, spilled oil in the port of Nakhodka in Russia's Far East.
On Oct. 14, some 5,000 square meters of fuel spilled into the Volga River approximately 150 kilometers north of Moscow. And on Oct. 2, about 500 liters of diesel fuel spilled into the Angara River in Siberia from a ruptured transport barge.
While regional authorities have either opened investigations or launched clean-up efforts at all of the spill sites, the pollution has already had an impact on the local environment.
Oil spills have become a major environmental topic in Russia since the notorious Norilsk oil spill in May, which released 21,000 tons of diesel fuel into the surrounding river and soil.

- Hungry Polar Bears Surround Russian Garbage Truck | The Moscow Times

- Description
- Ten polar bears recently surrounded a stopped garbage truck in Siberia, climbing on top of the truck to feast on scraps.
In typical Russian fashion, the driver appears unfazed and simply makes a phone call even as one of the bears stands against the windshield in front of him.
Encounters like these are becoming increasingly common in Russia's Arctic as climate change melts the sea ice on which polar bears hunt, forcing them southward toward human settlements in search of food.
Last winter, 56 polar bears surrounded another town in the far-north Chukotka region of Russia, forcing residents to form bear patrols and cancel public events, lest they have a dicey run-in with one of these massive creatures.

In the past month alone, Russia’s environment has seen mass aquatic die-offs in not one, but two places.
In the Far East republic of Kamchatka, up to 95% of seabed life was wiped out in the Avacha Bay earlier this month, potentially devastating the local ecosystem.
In the republic of Kalmykia near the Caspian Sea, thousands of dead fish washed up on shore this weekend, prompting an investigation.
In Moscow, the nation’s capital, three different sites of pollution were spotted in the Moscow River last week alone.
While federal authorities have launched projects including a large-scale project to both test pollution levels in the Volga River as well as clean it up, many of Russia's fragile ecosystems remain under threat.

- Mysterious Disaster Devastates Marine Life in Russia’s Kamchatka | The Moscow Times

- Hundreds of dead marine animals washed up onshore in Russia’s Far East region of Kamchatka this month in what environmentalists call an ecological disaster.
While the cause of the disaster is still unknown, Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case into pollution.
Senior scientists told The Moscow Times that the mass die-off may be the result of toxins emitted by rapid algae bloom caused by climate change. Scientists say that almost 95% of all sea-bed marine life in the Avacha Bay has been completely wiped out by the mysterious tragedy.
No matter the cause, the event sparked a public outcry as Russians begin to wake up to the harmful effects of climate change.

Russia held its famous Victory Day parade on Moscow's Red Square on June 24.
The event is traditionally held on May 9 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Officials selected June 24 in honor of the first Victory Day parade in 1945, which took place one month after the Soviet victory over Nazi forces in World War II.
Critics noted that the parade could be a ploy to garner public support ahead of an upcoming vote on constitutional amendments that would allow Putin to stay in office until 2036.
Others criticized the lack of social distancing and medical masks at the parade and warned of a potential coronavirus outbreak.

- Russian Political Ad Bashes Gay Marriage | The Moscow Times
- Date posted
- Description
- Pro-Kremlin media groups have released a political ad that bashes gay marriage and paints same-sex adoption in a negative light.
The video urges Russians to vote in a referendum on constitutional amendments which is scheduled for July 1.
The amendments include provisions for defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, as well as allowing presidents to run for office regardless of the number of previous terms they served.
This would allow Putin to run for two more consecutive six-year terms, making him 83 at the time he would step down from office.
