- Description
- In 1965, George Harrison became fascinated with the sitar. He dove headfirst into exploring Indian music, taking sitar lessons and introducing the instrument into Beatle recordings, starting with Rubber Soul's "Norwegian Wood." Soon, the Beatles created a bridge between Western and Eastern cultures. In 1968, the Beatles' growing interest in Eastern philosophy led them to visit the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India and sparked an ongoing interest in transcendental meditation, yoga, Indian music, and Hindu philosophy that continues to this day. Scott explores the impact of these influences on their songs and albums.

- Description
- During the mid-sixties, Tara Browne was a central figure in London's swinging scene. He was associated with the Rolling Stones, a Vogue model, a race car driver, and a clothing shop he owned called Dandie Fashions. He was also a close friend to the Beatles, introducing Paul McCartney to LSD. When Browne tragically died in a car accident on December 17, 1966, John Lennon was inspired to pen "A Day in the Life, " a somber reflection on the accident, complemented by McCartney's bridge, cheerfully depicting mundane life. Scott takes us through the writing and recording of this emotional, unique and iconic classic, a defining moment in Beatles' history.

- A Passion for Oysters | Chesapeake Bay Week

- Description
- To the casual eye, oysters are nothing much to look at. Yet this humble shellfish that once populated the Chesapeake Bay’s bottoms in massive numbers, has inspired shooting wars, piracy, social and environmental conflict, and libraries of legislation for more than two centuries. Today, the conflicts continue, even as oyster populations are reduced to some one percent of their historical bounty. “A Passion for Oysters” explores these issues and more, evoking the history, culture, art, and science surrounding the Chesapeake oyster, with an eye to explaining the roots of the never ending conflict it inspires.

In a beautiful mix of song and story, Brooks Long, the host of WTMD's Six Degrees of Soul show, interviewed the group to learn about what has inspired the group's music over six decades.
About The Legendary Ingramettes: Six decades of music, 65 years of song, generations tied together through the force of will of a matriarchy of powerful women. This is the story of the African-American gospel quintet The Legendary Ingramettes, founded by Maggie Ingram (who passed away in 2015) as a way to keep her family together through hardship. Her daughter, Almeta Ingram-Miller, took up the mantle as a way to continue Maggie’s legacy. Inspired by the Black male gospel quartets of the 1940s and '50s, The Legendary Ingramettes serve up roof-raising harmonies and explosively powerful vocals, al...

The result was "Penny Lane." Originally intended for a Liverpool-themed album, "Penny Lane" captures the daily essence of Liverpool. Join Scott Freiman for an exploration of the real-life inspirations and musical innovations behind this Beatles classic. Based on a Liverpool roundabout named Smithdown Place that was a transit point for young John Lennon, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney, Freiman explores how "Penny Lane" was inspired by characters and places of the area that actually existed. In addition, he explores McCartney's musical brilliance, highlighting unexpected chord changes and intricate arrangements, including the incorporation of an iconic piccolo trumpet solo.
