- Andy Burnham on future of HS2 to Manchester: Desperate act of a dying government
- Date posted

- Description
- Andy Burnham has hit out at reported plans to axe the Birmingham to Manchester leg of HS2.
The Greater Manchester Mayor called on Rishi Sunak to “end this shambles” on HS2 as reports emerged that the government were set to scrap plans to bring the railway to the city.
He said that axing the northern leg of HS2 would be the “desperate act of a dying government”.
In a hastily arranged press conference, he said that local politicians would not accept “vague commitments” on east-west links.
Mr Burnham said: “People are meeting in rooms yards from where we’re standing now about decisions that will affect the future of the north of England for the rest of the century.
“But nobody in government deems that they should pick up the phone to the leader of Manchester City Council or to myself, and, quite frankly, for the city that’s hosting this conference, and we’re pleased to do that, I don’t think that is...

- Greater Manchester's buses over the years as Bee Network begins
- Date posted
- Description
- A new era begins in Greater Manchester this weekend - with bus passengers in the driving seat.
For the first time in almost 40 years, private operators will have no say over routes, fares, frequencies, timetables and overall standards, giving power back to the paying public. Franchising - beginning on public services on Sunday - marks the biggest shake-up of bus services here in a generation.
It's the first step for the Bee Network - Greater Manchester's bold and much-needed plan for an integrated, London-style transport network – and a drive to reverse the decades-long decline in bus patronage.
The Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester has released this archive footage of buses over the years - from SELNEC to GM buses - as the Bee Network begins in Greater Manchester.
Which buses do you remember travelling on?

- In the world of pyramids, Greater Manchester might not be the place you picture. But Mancs know that Stockport is home to a special pyramid of its own.
Jokingly dubbed the 'eighth wonder of the world', the Stockport Pyramid has been the centre of rumours, stories, and speculation since it was built in the late eighties. Originally part of the 'Valley of the Kings' project which aimed to see five pyramids built along the River Mersey, it was the only one that was ever constructed.
Though thousands drive past the glass structure everyday on the M60, most will have never been inside. The building lay dormant before the Co-op bank opted to base their head office there in 1995. Now, abandoned since 2018, the building stands empty - a mysterious ziggurat with a magnetic allure.
Plans for the pyramid's future are almost in place, and have been met with excitement from across the North West. The owners of award-winning restaurant chain Royal Nawaab have c...

- UK inflation unexpectedly slows to lowest rate in 18 months
- Date posted

- Description
- Pressure on the Bank of England to pause interest rate hikes is building after official figures showed a surprise easing of UK inflation last month.
Business groups have joined the calls on policymakers to keep interest rates as they are ahead of the latest decision, due to be announced on Thursday.
It comes after the rate of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) fell to 6.7% in August, down from 6.8% in July, and the lowest rate since February last year.
Analysts, and the Bank of England, had predicted inflation to accelerate last month to a reading of 7.1% due to a sharp rise in motor fuel amid a rebound in oil prices.
But a slowdown in food price inflation, as well as falling restaurant and hotel prices, helped offset rising petrol and diesel costs, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
The new inflation data prompted market expectations over whether the Bank will raise interest rates to 5.5% on Thursday, from the curre...

- A milkshake combining strawberries, Nutella spread, Oreos, marshmallows and white chocolate shavings might sound extravagant, perhaps even a little indulgent, but at a dessert parlour in Rochdale, literally anything goes.
Nestled between a shop selling blinds and an African food store, the cheekily named Whipped, is raising the bar for late night treats in the town. Opened earlier this year by married couple Miriam Iqbal and Adeem Akram, it’s a completely new challenge for the pair, who, after identifying a gap in the market, knew they had to take the plunge.
“Before we got together we thought let's do a business of some sort and we felt like Rochdale was missing a dessert shop, especially one where everything is made in-house,” says Miriam.
Serving up soft and fluffy waffle balls, build-your-own brownies and decadent cheesecake slices as late as 2am, it’s already proving to be a popular addition to Rochdale’s food and drink scene. The m...

Over the coming months, the 25,000 sq ft venue will also become a home for pop-up events, live music and family friendly activities.
Named after the original stretch of dock which was once a thriving loading bay during the industrial revolution, Central Bay sits at the heart of a number of Salford landmarks, which can be admired from its south-facing outside terrace, providing space for up to 600 ...

- Saharan dust leaves cars filthy in Greater Manchester after rain falls
- Date posted
- Description
- People waking up across the UK this morning may have left wondering why their cars appeared "dusty" after it rained overnight.
After days of blistering heat, it cooled down slightly overnight with rain falling over much of the country.
However, the rain appeared to be "dirty" - leaving vehicles, windscreens and windows looking pretty filthy and covered in dust. On Thursday morning many people took to social media to share their own pictures of filthy cars and to find out what exactly the reason was behind it.
According to the Met Office the reason for the "dirty" is down to the Sahara desert.
Stephen Dixon, a Met Office spokesperson, explained to the M.E.N: "Saharan dust has been in the atmosphere around the UK in recent days. For Manchester, some of this has been rained out in early morning showers, which gives this ‘dirty’ look that some people will have noticed on their car this morning.

- Rishi Sunak will face Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions for the first time in seven weeks as he comes under pressure to declare what he knew about the crumbling concrete crisis in schools.
The Conservative Party leader has become embroiled in the row after one of his ministers suggested Mr Sunak approved for 50 schools to be rebuilt a year when he was chancellor, rejecting an application for 200 to be given the same treatment.
Concerns over reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) have caused more than 100 schools in England to partially or fully shut.
Mr Sunak is likely to be grilled by the Labour leader on the funding made available to tackle faulty classroom concrete when the two face off on Wednesday for the first time since Parliament returned from its summer break.
Labour has already signalled it will look to use an arcane parliamentary mechanism to discover what the Prime Minister knew about the crisis durin...

The drama unfolded at the Sainsbury's store in Hazel Grove, Stockport, on Saturday afternoon (September 2).

Another clutching a hammer runs towards them and whacks the trolley.
The two men then run towards the group a second time before the group eventually flees, without the motorbikes, on two bikes Greater Manchester Police say are believed to h...

- Full blue super moon: How to see August's 2023 rare celestial event over UK on Thursday
- Date posted
- Description
- A rare super blue moon will appear over the UK on Thursday night, treating stargazers to a phenomenon that will only happen once this year.
Unlike the suggestion of its name, a blue moon is not named after the colour and instead refers to the second full moon in one calendar month.
Most months only have one full moon, so a second is a quite a rare event, occurring approximately once every two or three years.
The moon appears larger than usual, and will rise at around 8pm (BST) on Thursday, setting at around 6am (BST) the following day.
The peak of the full moon – when the near side of it is completely lit up by the sun is at 2.35am (BST) on Friday morning.
However, those who might not be able to stay up into the early hours do not need to worry about the event, as experts say it will not look noticeably different during the night.
Instead, the best time to catch a glimpse is when your local conditions are b...

Chaos Karts combines real-life racing with augmented reality and it feels like you're inside a game of Mario Kart. Each player has their own kart and just like Mario, you get to pick your own avatar and even the colour of your vehicle.
The easiest way to explain it is that the players are real, the karts are real and the racing experience is real - you whizz around an actual track. It's the track that changes each time though, as it's projected onto the floor along with the rest of the landscape that surrounds you.
