- Date posted
- Description
- Operation Safe Harbor Exercise on Mackinac Island was an 8 year planning project between Michigan National Guard and Mackinac County Emergency Management to ensure that evacuation considerations were in place in the event the island’s public harbor was inoperable. The planning team reviewed various all-hazard courses of action, but quickly determined that mass evacuation would only be successful by using the ferry company vessels and constructing a second docking location on the more remote portion of the island.
To construct the dock, Michigan National Guard utilized the 51st CST bridging bays by sling loading them into the open water, something that has never been done before. At the end of the exercise, proof of concept was established, providing a unique and repeatable solution to any remote population.
The exercise demonstrated that the best solutions are only possible through leveraging the strengths and resources through the whole of community appro...

- Overview of the Second Edition of FEMA P-804
- Date posted
- Description
- This video provides an overview of the second edition of FEMA P-804, Wind Retrofit Guide for Residential Buildings in Hurricane-Prone Regions. Every year, houses along the coast are subject to high winds that cause extensive damage and threaten the safety and security of coastal residents. Much of this wind-related damage can be reduced by improving the performance of the existing buildings through retrofits that strengthen the residential building’s envelope and load path. FEMA P-804 summarizes the technical information needed for selecting and implementing cost-effective wind retrofit projects for existing one- and two-family dwellings. The second edition of FEMA P-804 (last published in 2010) provides clarified and updated guidance based on lessons learned over the past 13 years of post-hurricane damage assessments and advances in wind engineering.
