- The Weekly Podcast: Nixon Death 30 Years Later: Remembering Congress Reaction
- Date posted

- Description
- It is my sad duty to inform you officially of the death of Richard Milhous Nixon, the thirty-seventh President of the United States
Born in 1913, he was first elected to the Congress in 1946, a member of that historic freshman class of World War II veterans that also included John F. Kennedy. He was elected to the Senate in 1950, and served two terms as Vice President of the United States between 1953 and 1961. His career in the Congress coincided with the great expansion of the American middle class, when men and women from backgrounds as humble as his own secured the triumph of freedom abroad and the promise of economic growth at home
That was a message from President Clinton … read at the beginning of the House session on April 25, 1994. It was the first day Congress met after Richard Nixon’s, death three days earlier.
In 1968, Richard Nixon was elected the 37th President after previously serving as a U.S. Representative and a U.S. Senator....

- Washington Today (4-16-24): House GOP sends DHS Sec impeachment articles to Senate for trial
- Date posted
- Description
- House Republican impeachment managers walk the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro to the Senate, where they are formally presented.
The articles charge the Secretary with "willfully" failing to enforce immigration and border security laws to prevent the wave of migrants which have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years and a "breach of public trust" by lying to Congress about whether the border is secure.
The question now is whether the Senate will conduct a full impeachment trial, as most Republicans have asked for, or quickly table, or kill, the articles, as many Democrats have called for.
After a second House Republican – Thomas Massie (R-KY) – supports a motion to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and calls on him to resign, the Speaker says he is "not resigning," saying it is "an absurd notion" that someone would bring a motion to vacate "when we are simply here trying to do our jobs." China is the largest export market for American agricultural products.
The stop came during Secretary Yellen's five-day trip to China where she raised concerns about China's overproduction of cheap electric vehicles, solar panels and batteries aided by heavy government subsidies.
The U.S. and other countries fear cheap Chinese exports could undercut companies overseas, like it did in the early 2010s when China flooded the global market with steel and aluminum at artificially depressed prices.
"When the global market is flooded by artificially cheap Chinese products, the viability of American and other foreign firms is put into question," Secretary Yellen said in remarks earlier in the day.
